Selamat Menyambut Tahun Baru!

I would like to bring to the attention Malaysiakini readers that I feel there is no more honour left in this country’s Parliament. Due to the immunity against prosecution given under the law, the Parliament is being used as place to create lies, make irresponsible and sexist remarks. It is a place where our esteemed MPs show their childish behaviour
For example, during the recent 2008 budget speech in Parliament, the prime minister said and I quote, “Mr Speaker, the government has progressively increased the access as well as reduced the cost of education. Last year, the examination fees for PMR, SPM and STPM were abolished. The only remaining fees are the examination fee for Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia and the annual fee for primary and secondary schools. Effective 2008, all these fees will be abolished.”

People, when assembled in large groups, can be disastrously evil. People allowed to act as individuals can have scary thoughts, but they are usually harmless. So what happens when you collect large amounts of data from individuals and assemble behavioral dynamics for the masses?
The latest trend in the interactive industry consolidation is a turf war to make the consuming public’s life easier and more enjoyable. Centering around this activity of course, is the mountain of revenue in collecting fees for the once scoffed at search engine advertising links.
Isn’t simplicity beautiful? Advertising is going to become relevant and user controlled. The media landscape will change forever. Everything else we are discussing (privacy, data collection, etc.) with the latest round of proposed mergers is more or less academic. Or is it?

Dear Reader,
“Economists have correctly predicted nine of the last five recessions.”
Paul Samuelson, Economist
In a radio interview last Saturday, the hosts asked me if I thought we would head into a recession in 2008. I answered that I didn’t think so; I think we see a slower economy, but not an all-out recession.
I still think this is the case, but there was an alarm that sounded on Thursday that has me concerned.
I have written about the Leading Indicators report in the past. The report is believed to predict whether the economy is heading for a recession.
The predictions are based on two parts. The first part is that the six-month cumulative total reaches -1.0 percent. The November report came in at -0.4 on Thursday, putting the six-month cumulative total at -1.2 percent. This is the first six-month reading below – 1.0 percent since 2001. Seems there is a trojan out there that can replace Google AdWords with other ads, according to BitDefender. The bug is loaded when a person visits an infected website and the malware attaches itself to a user’s computer.
Then when they surf a publishing site that displays AdWords the ads are replaced by similiar looking ones from other advertisers.
“The threat, which is identified by BitDefender as Trojan.Qhost.WU, modifies the infected computers’ Hosts file (a local storage for domain name / IP address mappings, which is consulted before domain name servers and is considered authoritative).
The modified file contains a line redirecting the host “page2.googlesyndication.com” which should point to an IP of the form 6x.xxx.xxx.xxx to a different address, of the form 9x.xxx.xxx.xxx, so that the infected machines’ browsers read ads from server at the replacement address rather than from Google,” BitDefender noted.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has the capacity to retain its leadership in global Islamic finance despite the emergence of competition from centres such as Hong Kong and Dubai, CIMB Islamic chief executive officer Badlisyah Abdul Ghani said.
He said despite the stiff competition that Malaysia was facing, it was way ahead of other countries in terms of product offerings and its sophistication, having been developing the market for the last 40 years.
Britain, Singapore, Dubai have recently joined the race to offer Islamic banking and investment products to investors, each vying to become the international hub for Islamic finance. Japan recently also expressed interest in launching a government sukuk.
